In this guest blog Ian Skinner of Diverse Cleaning Company South Ltd discusses the importance of deep cleaning ducting in commercial kitchens. He has seen from his own personal experience how businesses trying to save money in this area have paid a high price in the long run.
For a fire to occur 3 elements are required namely Heat, Oxygen and Fuel. Unless all three elements are present a fire cannot occur. In a commercial kitchen environment there is always going to be heat and oxygen present so the business owner must insure the third element of fuel is not introduced into the mix.
Scheduled deep cleaning of kitchen extract ventilation systems is not just advisable, its essential as this removes a potential source of “Fuel”. Dirty, greasy duct-work enables fires to spread rapidly though buildings and in the event of a serious fire it is extremely unlikely that your insurers will cover your losses. The assumption will be that without fuel a fire could not have occurred or spread throughout your premises.
What is the answer?
Regular deep cleaning by a professionally competent contractor will ensure that the risk is removed / reduced. The cleaning company will provide you with supporting documentation to facilitate complicity to legislation and insurers demands.
In recent months a number of restaurants decided against having their ducting cleaned for economic reasons. As a result fire ravaged their business premises resulting in uninsured losses that ran into hundreds of thousands of pounds. Have your duct-work checked regularly by a reputable company. Surveys are normally free and it just could save your business.
